NOAA LICENSE FOR GOOGLE EARTH ENTERPRISE CLIENT AND GOOGLE MAPS

CONTRACT COVERAGE
NOAA has purchased Google geospatial software licensing from Onix Networking, Inc., a GSA reseller, for Google Earth Pro and Enterprise Client and Google Maps API Premier.

A Message from Joe Klimavicz, NOAA CIO

Many NOAA organizations are working hard to deliver and display environmental data to end users in an integrated and timely manner using easy to use and intuitive visualization tools. Several geospatial software products from Google have rapidly become industry standards for displaying and viewing earth images through the Internet. Earlier this year the NOAA Geographic Information Systems (GIS) Committee together with my staff undertook an effort to acquire software licenses NOAA-wide for Google's geospatial products, Google Earth® and Google Maps® in order to reduce the cost, increase the availability, and improve the management of NOAA’s geospatial software.

What Does This Mean to You as a NOAA Employee?

A word about software availability. NOAA purchased Google geospatial software, the Google Earth Pro (Enterprise Client) and Google Maps API Premier in September 2007. The Google Earth Pro/EC and Google Maps API Premier products contain software features and technical support for professional and commercial use, beyond the general “free” availability from Google on the internet. The NOAA licenses include the ability to upgrade to new version releases. For example, Google Earth 5.x (now featuring Google Ocean).

More information is available on the NOAA GIS Community website. You may also contact your Line Office POC listed below. Your license is associated with your Line Office. When prompted to login, use your NOAA email username/password.

below.

A word about systems requirements. Google Earth is available for each of the 3 major operating systems: PC, Mac, and Linux.

For Mac or Linux OSX: Please contact your NOAA Line Office or Staff Office Point of Contact to obtain the url download and activation key.

A word about downloads. NOAA asks users and/or Help Desks to download Google Earth by using the link associated with your home Line Office. After you install and run the program for the first time, the product license key process will credit your Line Office with the activation. Please see below, “GETTING THE LICENSED SOFTWARE PRODUCTS”.

A word about home use rights. If you do NOAA-related work at home on a PC that is your own personal property, and you develop NOAA products using Google Earth, please contact your Line Office POC (listed below).

A word about Section 508 compliance. Google supports the Government's initiative to provide 508 compliant software products. For Google’s response on how the products meet the standards, see more information about accessibility.

A word about opportunities and benefits for NOAA’s mission using Google Earth and Maps. Developers in NOAA are already disseminating Internet/geographic/visual based products to the public. The NOAA Google Working Group has posted web pages describing NOAA usage of Google Earth and Google Maps API to share with you. Google Maps applications, demos, and discussions

Hints on using Google Ocean.

• NOTE - to get beneath the surface of the ocean, you must have the "terrain" layer turned on (last layer on the bottom left of your screen)
